Welcome to Bishops Lydeard Church School

Bishops Lydeard Church School is situated in a stunning location at the foot of the Quantock Hills – an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is located about six miles north of the county town of Taunton.

We are supported by the Bath & Wells Diocese, which first opened its doors to children on 1st April 1872. The original building had sandstone walls and consisted of one long, high classroom for the older children and a smaller room for the younger children. Over the years the school has been modernised and we now have seven classrooms and a variety of resource areas including a library, intervention room, SENCO room.

We have recently refurbished the Early Years Area including a new ‘outdoor classroom’ providing suitable and environmentally friendly accommodation for our youngest children. Strong community links with a local charity, ‘Green Days’ has also enabled us to develop and improve our outside area.

We have one class per year group, therefore have seven classes from Reception to Year 6. Although the number of pupils in each class can vary, the average is currently 30. In addition to the class teachers we have an experienced and strong team of teaching assistants to support pupils throughout the School and also a Special Needs Coordinator.

The School enjoys the support of a keen and dedicated Governing Body drawn from parents, staff, the church and community groups. There is also an enthusiastic School Association which works tirelessly to organise social fund raising events to support the children and the School in general.

Our community is very important to us and we have strong links with the village, church and local cluster of eight primary schools and feeder secondary school, Kingsmead Academy. The School recently converted to become a member of the Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust. The village itself is self-contained having a number of shops, post office, library, nursing home and also St Mary’s Church with which the school is closely connected.
